Free Energy

There’s no such thing as free energy.  It’s a fundamental concept of the universe.  It was considered a fact by everyone on earth.  I believed in it to until one day when my masters project on high energy radiation blew up.  Ok blew up may not be the right term.  What It did was melt through 2 stories of our building into the emergency generator room.  It was the fuel for the generator that blew up.  That was probably a good thing though as it spread the high energy mass out enough to stop it from doing any more damage.

I was trying to show how best to shield an object from radiation.  We used lead, gold, other heavy elements and mixtures of heavy elements to see which could prevent the release of radiation better.  We set up an x ray and gamma ray emitter in a sealed container made of one of the test materials.  Then we would measure the amount of radiation that got through the shielding.  This seemed like an easy masters projects and it would have real world benefits.

The melt down occurred one day when no radiation got out.  The mixture we tested that day was XXXXX.  What we did notice was that after a few minutes of the device being on that the temperature of the shielding went up.  So we turned it off.  The temperature kept going up.  And going up.  Well, you know the rest.

Now you would think a disaster like this would get us into a bunch of trouble.  Nope.  Just the opposite.  Newspapers acted like we were great scientists and money was thrown at us from governments who saw the heat as a new cheap energy source.  Now the fact that we didn’t have a clue about what had happened or why didn’t seem that big a deal.  We were in demand.

The best offer came from the Caribbean.  They would pay us a ton of money plus we got to set up shop on one of their many island paradises.  This was every college students dream.  So we set up shop trying to figure out what happened.

What we didn’t know was the COUNTRY wanted results a little faster than we could hope to produce.  They build whatever we build on a larger scale.  A much larger scale.
